What to Expect at Your First Clinical Hypnotherapy Appointment

Considering a first clinical hypnotherapy appointment? Two questions usually come first: What will actually happen? and Will I still be in control?

Those are sensible questions. Clinical hypnotherapy can sound unfamiliar when your only reference is stage hypnosis or something dramatic on television. A first appointment at Naturology Centre is much more grounded: a private conversation, a clear explanation of the process, and a plan shaped around the concern that brought you in.

You are not expected to perform, empty your mind, or reach a perfect state of relaxation.

The conversation comes first

Before any hypnosis exercise is considered, Andrew reviews what you would like to change and what has been keeping the pattern going.

Depending on your concern, that conversation may include:

  • what you are experiencing and when it tends to happen;
  • stress, sleep, habit, digestive, confidence, or avoidance patterns;
  • what you have already tried and what was or was not helpful;
  • relevant health history, current care, medication, or supplements; and
  • what a useful, realistic improvement would look like in everyday life.

This part matters because two people can describe the same symptom while needing very different starting points. The goal is not to fit you into a script. It is to understand the pattern well enough to choose an appropriate pace and approach.

What hypnosis usually feels like

Clinical hypnotherapy uses focused attention, guided imagery, and therapeutic suggestion. Most people experience it as a calm, absorbed state—similar to becoming deeply engaged in a book, music, or familiar drive while remaining aware of what is happening.

You do not lose control. You can hear what is being said, speak if you need to, adjust your position, open your eyes, or stop the exercise at any time. Hypnotherapy is collaborative and consent-based; suggestions are connected to the goals discussed with you.

There is also no single “correct” feeling. Some people feel deeply relaxed. Others simply notice that their attention becomes quieter and more focused. Both can be useful.

A typical first appointment

Although every visit is individualized, a first appointment commonly includes five parts:

  1. Clarifying your goal. You and Andrew define the concern in practical terms and identify the situations, sensations, thoughts, or routines connected to it.
  2. Reviewing relevant context. This may include stress load, sleep, health history, current supports, and anything that could affect the plan.
  3. Explaining the approach. Andrew answers questions, discusses what hypnotherapy can and cannot reasonably provide, and confirms that you are comfortable proceeding.
  4. Trying an initial exercise when appropriate. This may involve focused breathing, imagery, nervous-system regulation, or a brief hypnosis exercise. There is no pressure to continue if it does not feel right.
  5. Choosing the next step. You finish with a clearer understanding of the pattern and whether visit-by-visit care, a structured program, another approach, or involvement from another provider makes the most sense.

Hypnotherapy is not the only tool available

Some appointments use clinical hypnotherapy as the main approach. Others may begin with education, practical nervous-system strategies, or HeartMath HRV biofeedback so you can see how breathing, attention, and emotional state influence your physiological response in real time.

The method should fit the person—not the other way around.

Naturology Centre offers focused support for anxiety and stress patterns, sleep difficulties, IBS and gut-brain concerns, specific fears, confidence, smoking or vaping cessation, weight and lifestyle patterns, and other agreed-upon habit-change goals. Some concerns are offered through structured multi-visit programs; others can be approached visit by visit.

How to prepare

You do not need to practise hypnosis before arriving. It is enough to think about:

  • the main change you would like help with;
  • when the pattern is most noticeable;
  • what you have already tried;
  • any questions or concerns about hypnosis; and
  • relevant health information or current care that Andrew should understand.

Wear whatever allows you to sit comfortably. Avoid arriving under the influence of alcohol or non-prescribed substances, and check your booking confirmation for the appointment time and location.

When other care is important

Clinical hypnotherapy is supportive care. It does not replace emergency services, primary medical care, prescribed treatment, or appropriate psychological or psychiatric care. Medication decisions remain with the prescribing professional.

If your history or symptoms suggest that medical, dental, mental-health, sleep, or digestive assessment should be involved, Andrew will discuss that with you. Care can often work alongside the providers already supporting you.

Is it the right starting point for you?

You do not need to know the answer before booking. The purpose of an initial consultation is to understand your goal, answer your questions, and decide together whether clinical hypnotherapy—or another available approach—is an appropriate fit.

Appointments are available with Andrew Maillet, PhD, ND, DO, at 7 Alma St in downtown Moncton, with secure virtual appointments available across New Brunswick where appropriate.
